However lambada dancers still wanted to continue dancing and started using zouk, since it had a similar rhythm to lambada. Zouk is a music style from the Caribbean islands, popularised by the band Kassav from the French Caribbean island Guadeloupe.
The development from lambada to zouk happened independently in multiple places in Brazil. Other places like Porto Seguro gave birth to lambazouk that kept more elements from lambada like circular movements, constant stepping and higher energy.
Zouk has spread from Brazil to all over the world with zouk dancers everywhere from Singapore and Australia to US, Russia, Netherlands and even Hawaii. The ideal speed is bpm, but we can also dance up to 90 bpm, especially in lambazouk. Take a listen to a short clip of tresillo-over-two that is the zouk rhythm we know and love. When it comes to bachata, it seems like zouk has influenced it a lot.
They are also now using pop songs at parties and making bachata remixes out of them, similarily to what zouk dancers have been doing. However both branches have evolved in slightly different directions and as a zouk dancer at a kizomba party today, I will most likely find the songs a bit too fast for dancing. They aren't nearly as popular as Bachata here in Seattle, but they might simply be because they're newer I think. In fact, I think there's just one dance instructor here in Seattle who teaches Zouk and one who teaches Kizomba. I just recently learned that Kizomba is derived in part from Zouk. Anyway, I'd be interested in learning how popular Zouk and Kizomba are where you live.
Where do people dance Zouk or Kizomba Do they appear to be growing in popularity? Have you ever taken Zouk or Kizomba classes? If so, do you like them? I believe Zouk is often incorporated into Bachata and perhaps Salsa , right?
Incidentally, I took one very brief Zouk class, but it didn't grab a hold of me the way Bachata did. However, I may just need a little more exposure to appreciate it. I'd never even heard of Kizomba until a few weeks ago. I'm not asking anyone to respond to all my questions. I'd just be grateful for any information or opinions you care to share. I heard that Zouk is the music and Kizomba is the dance. I got that I think from Iris de Britto on a youtube video.
There is a small zouk scene in Tokyo. I have been meaning to go along for a lesson for the last few weeks, but I have been busy. The zouk classes are not regular, and there are only one or two instructors that I know of. Zouk style music is never played in the salsa bars. I will let you know what I really think of zouk when I get down to a lesson Could it be similar to lambada?
I think that there may be some similarities.. I have taken zouk lessons really liked it. I browsed through Wikipedia's articles about Zouk and Kizomba, though I need to read them a couple more times to really digest everything. So Zouk refers to both a genre of music and the associated dance, and Kizomba refers to another form of music and dance. I got a little confused by Kizomba's nickname, "African tango.
