The first European visitor was the Scottish-born settler Nathanael Chalmers, in Reko, a Maori chief, led Chalmers on what was probably the first high octane tour — an off-road trip crossing mountain ranges, canoeing rivers and finally speeding through the Cromwell Gorge on a raft made of flax stems.
The friends married two sisters, Frances and Gertrude Gilbert. It was , and the settlers had a couple of years of peaceful farming before the gold rush of turned the area into a shantytown; within a few months, more than 1, miners were literally camped at their doorsteps. There are plenty of areas around Queenstown rich in history to explore.
National Parks. Activity Routes. The History of Queenstown Date: 23 February Ever wondered how Queenstown, the adventure capital of the world became the lively and booming adventure sports town that it now is? The history of Walter Peak.
How much have you won or lost on a coin toss? The fate of the first European settlers was apparently sealed using such a method. It seemed they were unable to find such nirvana in Australia, so the couple moved to Dunedin a few years later. In , the Otago Wastelands Act was passed by Parliament in an effort to develop farms or runs in the mostly uninhabited areas of the lower South Island. It was this act that gave Rees the impetus to set out on an intrepid journey.
Rees and five hardy companions set off from Dunedin in to find farming land. Through the harsh landscape, the group made it through Omarama, Lindis and eventually to Wanaka. It was a tough journey and by the time the party made it to Cardrona, there were only two men left; Rees and Nicholas Von Tunzelmann. After finally arriving in the Wakatipu basin, Rees and von Tunnzlemann became two of only a handful of Europeans to have ever set eyes on sparkling Lake Wakatipu before.
After exploring the area for three weeks, the pair took the arduous journey back to Dunedin and lodged a claim for grazing rights. After arriving back in the Wakatipu, the fateful coin toss was made.
