There are a few things that stand out, however, as a bit tough to stomach. Playing the game through multiple times, even with the prospect of different endings, is a bad idea according to David Cage. If Shaun dies and Ethan lives, Ethan will always commit suicide. While it is possible for all four playable characters to die at the end of the game, it is impossible for all of them to survive — even if they have survived their in-game chapters, all of the characters except Madison can still die in their epilogues.
Epilogue Results Ethan dies. Ethan survives and is not imprisoned; Shaun survives; Madison is never kissed, rejected, or dies. Don't turn off the game while it is saving. If you're unhappy with how something turned out, you can go back and replay chapters. From the main menu, select the Chapters options and pick the one you want to do over. When you replay a chapter, you will have the option to save or not save. If you choose to save, it will affect later on in the story if you do something differently.
If you choose not to save, you can just play through the game, and when you come back after quitting, you'll go back to your old save from before you began replaying chapters. To the best of my knowledge, the game has three save files. Each of those save files keeps "sub-saves" that mark the particular chapters of the game. So if you load any of those chapter sub-saves, the game will start you with the exact sequence of events where it was when you either originally got there or replayed the chapter and chose to save. So everything before a chapter will still be consistent.
The only things can that be inconsistent are future chapters if you, say, replay an old chapter and kill off a character, save, and then go back and play a later chapter. The game is still saved from the point where you originally got there, so the character you killed off will still be alive.
